A few thoughts about Christmas …

While many people have fond memories of Christmas and look forward to the festivities each year, it’s important to remember that this time of year is not enjoyable for everyone.

Christmas can be very lonely for some people, especially older people who are sometimes forgotten over Christmas and New Year. Those of us who are older may experience a degree of isolation due to mobility issues which may hinder social interactions, the hot weather, anxiety with regards to noise, crowds and family stresses at social events, as well as changes to usual routines. Reduced medical services over the Christmas/New Year break may make access to medical care tricky. Lastly, older people often experience loneliness or depression at this time of year, as the they become poignantly aware of lost loved ones.
